What is a postcode area?

A postcode area is characterised by the initial set of letters in a postcode. It contains one or two characters, e.g. 'B' for Birmingham or 'BS' for Bristol.

In the UK, there are a total of 124 unique postcode areas.

What is a postcode sector?

A postcode sector is characterised by the first part of a postcode before the space, followed by the initial digit that appears after the space.

There are around 11.2k postcode sectors in the UK.
